Stories of Hope You What We Do Home

Welcome to Africa!

Submitted by: Peter Kulemeka
Country Director, Malawi

Peter KulemekaGreetings from Malawi! In just a few short days President Clinton will be visiting us, and preparations are already underway for his arrival.

Although we work in a country facing many challenges, Clinton Foundation staff here in rural Malawi are eager to share with him – and you – the great progress we are making in partnership with the Government and many communities. We’ve been invited to work here by the Government and our efforts to implement their vision are very exciting.

Today, Malawi’s economy is centered around agriculture, with over 85% of the population living in rural areas. Many Malawians don’t have access to clean water and sanitation, or complete health services. The staff from the Clinton Hunter Development Initiative is working to respond to these local needs and to strengthen the ability of Malawians to lift themselves out of poverty.

Since launching our work last year, we’ve assisted in the registration and financing of the Neno Hills Farmers’ Association (NHFA), through which 1,200 Malawian farmers have been able to procure improved wheat seed and fertilizer, most of them for the first time.

We’ve also joined with Partners In Health and the Government on construction of Neno District Hospital and 23 adjacent houses for hospital staff.

The Clinton Foundation also is helping to manage the HIV/AIDS pandemic that perpetuates conditions of poverty. We have one of the stronger scale-up efforts in sub-Saharan Africa, and there has been a tenfold increase in the number of people receiving care and treatment since 2003. In addition, we already have helped 1,500 children start the treatment they need to survive. Still, half the people who need treatment can’t access it. So there is good progress in this area but there remain some major challenges.

We will continue to work with the Government and people of Malawi to approach the challenges as opportunities.

If you have any comments or questions about our work, please feel free to leave it in a comment.

Let the Journey begin!

It’s great to finally hear some good news about Africa. Keep up the important work!

  2. Kelly Says:

While the vast amount of challenges that Africa faces is very daunting - there are so many hopeful developments that are truly inspiring. I have been lucky to travel to several countries in Africa and witness firsthand communities that are making huge strides in business, agriculture and other areas. These stories of progress, entrepreneurship, and national pride are as important to share as the bleak figures of despair, poverty and sickness. I’d love to hear from others who have stories of hope to provide us all with optimism for the future. What stories inspire you?

  3. Toyin Says:

Thank you, President Clinton for the passion you have adorned for the
development of Africa. She is really a sleeping giant!. I sincerely believe
that mass education , as an initiative for her citizens, along with your other efforts will liberate the continent. Keep on the worldly efforts and God Bless you.

  4. Mary Jo Kelly Says:

My daughter is a recent high school graduate. She and some of her friends at Fox Chapel HS in Pittsburgh PA started a chapter of Invisible Children. They have raised a good bit of money to help a school in Africa to provide books, desks, lunches and other supplies. I am really very proud of them and the work that all the kids have done. Please check out the website for invisible children and see how many wonderful children there are in the USA that give so generously of their time, talent and own money to support their peers in Africa.
Thanks Mr Clinton for representing our administration who has only seen fit to steer our kids towards war as a way to deal with world problems.

  5. Marie Says:

Thank you for this wonderful site which is both informative and inspirational. President Clinton is an American who truely represents the heart and soul of our country through his outreach to beautiful South Africa.

If only we had more people like you!

While I appreciate your efforts in Africa, our republic is crumbling, our coffers have been drained, our rights are eroding, our middle class is disappearing and our lower class is being ignored. If you’re really committed to doing good in your post-Presidential years, come home and help us save our country.

Mr. President, thank you so much for taking time out from all of your other important tasks to highlight the emergency of the HIV pandemic. The world is not paying sufficient attention to this plague, which is threatening the health and security of humanity. We all owe you great thanks for your decision to use your influence to address this issue. The work of your foundation is impressive and your commitment is inspirational.

  15. david walker Says:

Mr. Clinton; As a longtime admirer of you and your intelligence,I applaud the work you and your foundation does for the less fortunate. My only question, why doesn’t charity start at home? We need to care for our people first. Katrina, loss of property in wildfires, endless flooding in the country, etc. Thanx for listening.

  16. David Shepard Says:

High altitude winds in the southern part of Africa will be capable of supplying all its energy needs when technologies for capturing this energy are fully developed.

This has the potential of doing much to alleviate the problems of much of Africa in addition to addressing global warming objectives.

I was an executive committee board member of the now defunct Overseas Development Council when James Grant was its president and very interested in these matters.

  17. Barbara Lang Says:

    President Clinton,
I wish I had the money to donate to this fabulous cause. I was so excited to be able to see you at Nokia Theatre in Grand Prairie, Tx, and I can tell you that I believe your mission is exactly what the world needs. I have no money at this time, but I will do anything else I can do to support this effort. I am a LMSW and I am willing to assist in any way I can. As President, you made so many positive changes for my family, and I can never repay that debt. Now, you continue to make positive changes in the world, which is really what all of us should focus upon.
Thank you for being so dedicated to making our world a place that is good for everyone, not just the elite.

  18. Margie Jones Says:

I think you are doing a great service to the African nation.
HOWEVER!! There is such need here at home I would like to
see some effort along the those lines on the home front.
Thanks for bringing hope to those who need so much.

  19. Rose Hann Says:

    Dear Mr. President,
I wanted to take a moment to say how incredibally proud and pleased I am. Your dedication is responsible for future and present lives being saved, quite a legacy. I wish I was wealthy and could travel to these remote places and use my medical background to help. I will look over this website to see what I can do that doesn’t rquire a lot of money.
Please keep up this terribly important matter. You nevr cease to amaze us. You have a kind heart. Imagine, medicine so inexpensive. It could actually happen in America!

    Mr. Kulemeka:

I have recently begun researching water initiatives in Africa. I was wondering if you have any opinion on Playpumps water pumps. Are they an effective way of bringing clean water to African communities?

    Thank you!

  22. Sony Thomas Says:

    Dear President Clinton,

I am delighted to know about your great mission to Africa. I am sure; your visit to the African Continent will definitely prove to be a great success. 25. Robert Wood-Smith. Says:

There has been a successful European AIDS clinical trial. Information concerning which, the Clinton Foundation has declined to respond.

The World Health Organization (WHO) was informed of the existence and success of the clinical trial. The Assistant Director-General replied, referring
to protocol inhibiting investigation concerning the reasons why knowledge of the success of the trial had been (and continues to be) suppressed. Subsequent to receipt of the above letter, the WHO announced an expectation 6,000,000 AIDS patients were expected to die within the next two years: the majority of these in Africa.

My position is that of Senior Partner of a medical research team ~ with scientific and medical knowledge of the underlying cause and treatment for AIDS. A true ‘authority’ within the establishment, would understand the underlying cause and treatment for the AIDS condition: those who block our progress, lack that position.

Mr. President, please, on your return to the United States ~ might you enquire why our letters have been ignored? We are aware there are financial vested interests who have demonstrated a desire that our knowledge be suppressed. I trust you will agree, the Clinton Foundation should not support such a stance. A positive response would be to ensure a repeat of the former AIDS clinical trial and publication of the method of treatment and results. As a first step, there needs to be face-to-face discussion concerning the relevant facts of the case.

I invite you to take positive steps to ensure appropriate action is taken. My Partners and I will undertake to contribute ‘without charge’, the advanced and proven knowledge which is the urgent need of a profession seeking to treat with success the AIDS community, worldwide.

  26. Raymond Jobran Says:

    Dear Bill,
I follow with great interest the wonderful work the Clinron Foundation is doing in South Africa, especially with the children. God bless you and keep you in good health so you can continue to lead and initiate such great work. This the kind of work that can bring positive change to a world that has been besieged in recent years with unjustifiable and unthinkable wars that produced horrendous terror. You are a man with great gifts, in my opinion it will be highly appreciated if you can invest your efforts in bringing peace and tranquility to many troubled regions in the world, especially the Middle East. I believe that you can do it. If you are interested I will be glad to offfer some practical suggestions.
Keep up the good work, we love you for that.
    Raymond

  27. NOEL MACKSON M. WASAMUNU Says:

Mr President, it is gratifying to note that you and the rest of the team have espoused this spirit: ‘The Spirit of UBUNTU’ which in my view will always rekindle the humane spirit in us from our Almighty God. Though beset with a lot of suffering, we can still proudly remain and fight these ills such as HIV and AIDS, Malaria and the like. I am convinced with your efforts Mr. President and my efforts as well as those of our beloved colleagues in Africa, the State and the World over espousing the Spirit of Ubuntu, we shall achieve a great milestone in our fight against HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other ills affecting mankind today.
I salute you Mr. President as I join you during your visit in Zambia.
And I want to say, Kozo!
Kozo is a Silozi word which translates in English as PEACE!
    So Kozo!

  28. Anita Richard Says:

    Dear Mr. Clinton,
It’s heartening to see that you are driven to take this journey to South Africa with such good intentions and the follow up of your intensions which is so reflected in the work which has already started. There is a song which goes like this,” It only takes a spark to start a fire……”. I wish you the best and one day I would like to see you in India with the same fire in your heart since there is a huge need for charismatic leaders like you to propel others to budge from the inertia of insensitivity towards the large no of hungry people, stricken with abject poverty. I am praying for my dreams to bear fruit.
    Good luck and God Bless.

    Anita Richard From Kolkata, India

  30. Leonora Smith Says:

    Dear Mr President!
Reading what you are doing for the people of Africa does my heart good.
It’s a Blessing to know that someone really cares for the plight of the People of Africa. You were a wonderful president and now you are a wonderful “president” again! Please keep up the good work and maybe, just maybe someone who is almost as caring(you are unreplacable) will work on the plight of the people here in the United States who also need help, especially our active, retired and Vietnam Era Veterans!

  31. Carolyn A. Says:

I have long been afraid that the powerful of our nation would simply allow Africa to exterminate itself with fear and AIDS.
So it is wonderful to know that many Americans do still value friendship and good ethics over expediency and greed. Together, those of us that remember a better America may be able to belong to the world again.
Thank you, President Clinton, for leading in this.

  32. Susan Baker Says:

Thank you for continuing your genuine concern and action to help any and all people of this world.

I have been sponsoring children through Christian Children’s Fund for approximately 26 years. It is a real wakeup call to people that these children live in such abject poverty that what we may make in less than a week, their parents make in a year.

I have sponsored children (their families and village/town) from Korea, several in Thailand, and presently Samuel in Uganda. I received a letter from Samuel’s mom yesterday thanking me for helping her little boy. I am thankful and honored that I can help make a difference.

    Keep up the great work!

    Susan Baker

  33. Steven Chen Says:

    Dear President Clinton,
I am a non-traditional student at INDIANA University (South Bend, Indiana). I have a disability and am on Social Security. I take one class a semester and just finished a class in International Inequalities. I learned about the world and especially Africa. I have fallen in love with the African People and the plights they have had to live with for these hundreds of years by people who have destroyed their cultures and stolen their natural resources. I am a senior now and will finish in four more years. I volunteer at Hope Rescue Mission here in South Bend. I imagine I will not do well financially after I graduate. I am already 53 years old…but I love people. And I want to help make the world a better place…so even if I am poor I will sustain myself on the work of the mission.
Please keep going with your program in Africa. Keep building that Continent to it’s former glory…before the Europeans arrived and devastated the land…

    Peace….

  50. Stephen John Macko Says:

Hope comes in many ways, because true leaders take the time to help people through out the world. I am thankful that the Former President of the United States of America has given time to the people that need help.

In many ways I think of how to express the fact that (people do work) water and irrigation both ad to producing food that would not be available without the work being done. The main hope I found in the last decade is that in Japan, where the earth was probable to not growing food (because of the half life of the problemed land). However, the people did not give up, and by putting work into the land, with men and women turning the soil there, now green plants grow again. Energy is work and men and women do work. This is the rational that has been made true. When food is taken to a land, people have the ability to do exercise and become strong.

Is irrigation possible, if so, growing food in worked land is probable?

    Peace be with you.

    God bless,

    Stephen John Macko

  51. Claudia Says:

God bless you Mr. Clinton for all you are doing. I am sure most of us appreciate your hard work. There are so many people in the USA who are financially able to do their part on the “homefront” that I don’t think you need to take that on as well. Keep up the good work and let us hope that others will do likewise for the “homefront”.

  52. Helen Tirben Says:

    Dear President Clinton,
There is an 86 acre parcel of property in Pope Valley, CA which could be used as a market garden to feed Oakland and Richmond’s needy youth. In fact it could also be a working retreat center which could get those same need children out of Oakland and Richmond into the country on weekends and in the summer, teach them to grow their food, take the food home to their families and or sell it and use the money for clothes, school books, tutors…. teach them to be business entrepreneurs without drugs being involved and help them to help their families with wholesome food. You could also, eventually have a working school there and the children could go home one weekend a month. I realize that you are doing wonderful things in Africa and I know that there is much to do in this country. Support Habitat for Humanity, building homes for the poor and develop youth groups in each city that you pay to renovate buildings that are in need of repair and painting which will eventually give them a trade.

  53. Tim Sandusky Says:

    Mr. President,
I have been building bridges in West Africa for 8 years because of the pure vision for humanity you have. Thanks for helping me as well as the millions of people using the bridges. God Bless

  54. Harjinder Singh Says:

    Respected President,
We are not late to be in those countries, they need help and you are the best to do that part, keep going, it is also peace of mind.

  55. Ruki Says:

    Dear president Clinton,
I jointed your trip in Sauth Africa intru internet side, I am very exiting for your excelent job in improving health of thousands and thousands childrens in this very poor area without infrastrucure and health services too.
This is the best things I am hearing nowdays to help peoples in need and here are you Mr.President Clinton doing humanitarian work!
    God Bless you

  56. Betty Newell Says:

I am deeply touched and impressed with what President Clinton has been able to make happen in Africa and in many other countries. However, without slighting at all the incredible things that have happened elsewhere, I am pleading with Mr. Clinton to please, please think a bit harder about the overwhelming needs here in our own country. I volunteer at least 20 hours a week with a program that helps low-income working families become more self-sufficient by assisting them with their vehicle transportation needs. As an all volunteer organization, we spend less than 1% of our funding on admin or overhead. If Mr. Clinton would focus some energy in our direction, I can only imagine what we could accomplish. So, thank you, Mr. President for what you are doing, but please consider domestic needs a bit more than you have in the past.

  57. Martha Doty Says:

    President Clinton:

You warm my 10 year old, 1963 heart. I was that age then, as I visited the then called Southern Rhodesia and other parts of Africa for the first time with my family. At that time, few were really thinking about Africa on such a global scale. My Dad had a vision that our family go for the UMC, the Board of Global Missions, to counsel pastors and families, to help ease tensions and to help the Rhodesian pastors work more effectively with each other through pastoral care. Remarkably the church has been doing this work for decades, but now, with your vision for change and healing, life can be better in this incredible continent of strong and beautiful souls. Bless you for seeing the need, inspiring others on a global scale, being a force for good and for healing, wholeness. Africa deserves our hearts and our philanthropy. You are remarkable, Bill Clinton, man of grace and wonder! Thank you.

  58. david bradley Says:

It is a blessing to see a man of your caliber has the time and heart
to utilize your resouces and skill to help those in Africa who are suffering
from a lack of proper healthcare. I have been in the medical field for
over twenty years, starting at USAMRIID. I have also been in the social
services arena for about 10 years. I have tracted the media attention
and the highlights of the entertainment community in Africa, but what
I have not seen is the same efforts made in the United States. I have followed and supported you as a USA leader and hope that you will
also attack the fight against HIV/AIDS here in the USA. I know that
the communities have not transitioned much because most of the educational federal entities still use HIV/AIDS as a whole when they are two distinct periods of infections and treatment. Once again thank you for your great efforts. Keep up the good work and hope that your leadership will shake up the political arena here in the USA concerning
HIV in the African American Community. No one in the US should be dying from AIDS when HIV is clearly treatable. Immobolize the truth of
capitalism. Create healthy and better communities. Thank You

  59. JOAN MARKOWITZ Says:

Dear Pres. Clinton, The work you are doing in Africa will someday come back to the United States and the rest of the world to make it a safer and healthier planet! We were in Africa about 10 years ago and saw the wonderful possibilities that continent could offer the world of the future. We saw the young children who only wanted pens and paper so they could go to school and their struggling parents who needed their kids to be educated and have a better existence than they did. May God bless you for how you will leave the world a better place for ALL people. Thank you Mr President and I wish you knew how well you fit that title!!!

cause I had seen on a website called Shoes 2 Share inc. Dear President Clinton,

I am happy to hear about such great things the Clinton Foundation is accomplishing.

I am a High School Technology Teacher in Cook County Jail in Chicago, IL. A astounding amount of the children (under 21) in Chicago are committing crimes and being incarcerated.

What can the Clinton Foundation do to help the young men and women who are incarcerated? How can we stop them from committing crimes again? Can you please help us keep the poor children of America from incarceration?

    Sincerely,

    James Lynch

The work being done by your Foundation is superb. If only, all the great religions of the world who are fighting it out there for supremacy, can accept their numerous weaknesses in all their useless agendas and focus their resources towards your Foundation and the many such Foundations, so that God will be pleased and keep the Fallen Angels (Satan) from further abusing man through its various temptations.
